Questions I asked

Ask away!  My recommendation would be ask as many questions as you want!  You deserve the right to be comfortable with your decision and should make a fully informed choice.

Here are some questions that I asked

Will my doctor know how to perform the collection?

Viacord sent instruction to my doctor ahead of time.  When I talked with my doctors, they all felt very comfortable with the collection process.

Do they collect cord blood before or after the delivery of the placenta?

Viacord explained that both methods are routinely used, and the volumes collected are very comparable.  This helped me feel comfortable because I knew that just in case I had a c-section, they could still do the cord blood collection.  The timing of the collection typically occurs within 20 minutes of birth and can be completed before or after the cord has stopped pulsating.  C-section collections are typically done post-placenta delivery.  The doctor can deliver the placenta into a sterile tray and then complete the cord blood collection.

Can the placenta stop pulsating before the collection occurs?

Yes- this was important to me and I know others have decided not to bank because they were under the impression that you couldn't wait.  You can though!  The cord blood can be collected at any time after the umbilical cord has been clamped and cut.  The collection is painless, easy, and safe for mother and baby.  The caregiver will not alter their normal birthing process in any way including the timing of the cord clamping.

Are you AABB accredited?

Viacord is AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) accredited.

How does the cord blood get to you?

Viacord's customer service arranged the transportation for me.  A medical courier picked the unit up from my hospital room and arranged for the transportation to their laboratory.

How will I know it has arrived safely?

Viacord proactively called me at the hospital to me know that the cord blood arrived safely.
